5 Comfort Foods That Feel Like a Hug

5 Comfort Foods That Feel Like a Hug
We all love food — whether we call ourselves foodies or not, everyone has that one dish that feels like home. Some meals do more than just satisfy hunger; they bring back memories, stir emotions, and remind us of people we love. They’re the dishes that feel like a warm hug from the inside — the very definition of comfort food.
Whether it’s something your grandmother lovingly made or a snack your mother packed in your lunchbox, comfort food has a way of staying with you forever. For me, there are many — but today, I’m sharing my top 5 comfort foods that never fail to lift my spirits.
1. Kadhi Chawal — My Forever Favorite
This is my ultimate comfort food. Kadhi chawal is a humble, satisfying dish made with yogurt (curd), gram flour (besan), turmeric, and a flavorful tempering of spices. My fondest memory of kadhi goes back to summer vacations at my maternal grandparents’ house. Within the first or second day of our arrival, my grandmother would prepare it — seasoning oil with mustard seeds, fenugreek, green chilies, onions, and curry leaves before adding the creamy curd mixture.
The entire house would be filled with the cozy aroma of kadhi, and everyone would gather around excited for lunch. Even today, when my mom and I feel like having something truly comforting, kadhi rice is our go-to.
2. Lemon Rice — Sunshine in a Bowl
Zesty, bright, and incredibly simple — lemon rice is the comfort food that always brings a smile. It’s made with cooked rice, mustard seeds, curry leaves, green chilies, and, of course, fresh lemon juice.
The first time I tried it was when my mom made it. At first, I was unsure — but a few bites in, it grew on me. Now, whenever I’m home alone or feeling lazy, lemon rice is my dependable bowl of sunshine. Whether paired with pickle and papad or eaten on its own, it's pure comfort.
3. White Sauce Pasta — Creamy, Cozy, and Always a Yes
There’s just something about creamy white sauce pasta that soothes the soul. Made with a buttery garlic béchamel and tossed with veggies like bell peppers, corn, or mushrooms, it’s indulgent, warm, and deeply comforting.
I first learned to make this during lockdown — a time filled with experimentation and quiet joys. I remember adding too much cheese, sometimes mixing in peri-peri powder for fun, and always feeling proud of the result. Now, whenever I need a pick-me-up, I turn to this dish — like a creamy journal of good memories.
4. Namak Ajwain Paratha with Chai — The Taste of Simplicity
Nothing beats the nostalgia of namak ajwain (carom seeds) ka paratha with a cup of hot chai. This simple flatbread, flavored only with salt and carom seeds, reminds me of cozy mornings and tiffin-packed school days.
My mom used to make these with a side of pickle for my lunchbox, and even now, it feels like a small celebration every time I make them at home. On rainy evenings or quiet mornings, there’s nothing better than this simple combo to make you feel grounded and cared for.
5. Khichdi with Onions, Lemon, Ghee & Pickle — A Hug in a Bowl
Khichdi — that humble mix of rice and lentils — becomes extraordinary when topped with caramelized onions, a squeeze of lemon, a spoonful of ghee, and a side of pickle.
It reminds me of sick days when my mom would bring me a hot bowl in bed — the aroma soothing everything around me. Every spoonful is warm, grounding, and filled with love. It’s my go-to when I want something easy, nourishing, and full of emotional comfort.
🥄 In the End…
Comfort food isn’t about fancy ingredients or complicated recipes — it’s about warmth, memories, and the feeling of being at home, even if you’re miles away from it. These five dishes have shaped my journey and stayed with me like dear friends.
